Aim and objectives
The aim of the UEMC is to promote and facilitate biological research and monitoring in order to increase our understanding of the Udzungwa Mountains, and to utilize this information to develop more effective conservation management and community education plans that will improve the long-term conservation of the National Park and the adjacent Forest Reserves.
Specific objectives of the UEMC are the following:
- Provide accommodation and research resources to visiting scientists
- Deliver technical advice to the Udzungwa Mountains National Park’s Ecology Department and the Forestry Division for implementing scientifically rigorous ecological monitoring
- Implement monitoring programmes
- Organise training courses for rangers, scouts, park ecologists and university students
- Promote school education programmes
- Network with other monitoring initiatives and biological field stations elsewhere in Tanzania and the tropics, in order to standardise monitoring protocols and exchange data and information.
