Monitoring, Research, DataPrimate monitoring A primate monitoring programme in Mwanihana forest in the National Park was established in 1998 as a component of a larger project on primate survey, monitoring and research (conducted by Drs. Ehardt, Struhsaker and Butynski) and the Ecology Department of the Udzungwa Mountains National Park. This programme is continuing today under the coordination of the UEMC. Four line-transects, 4 km in length, are walked in Mwanihana forest twice per month at a pace of about 1 km per hour by a local ecologist. All sightings of primates are recorded according to a standard form, where data on group size and habitat are also noted. Data are then entered into a computer and periodically analysed. Census results for the period 1998-2004 are published in the following paper (download pdf): Rovero F., Struhsaker T.T., Marshall A.R., Rynne T.A., Pedersen U.B., Ehardt C.L., Butynski T.M. and Mtui A.S. (2006). Abundance of Diurnal Primates in Mwanihana Forest, Udzungwa Mountains, Tanzania: a Multi-observer Comparison of Line-transect Data. International Journal of Primatology, 27: 675-697. Subsequent data are shown in UEMC annual technical reports (see downloadable report page). The same protocol was also established in 2004 in Uzungwa Scarp Forest Reserve, southern Udzungwa, by F. Rovero and collaborators. Data collection has been continuing since January 2007. |
