New mammal from the Udzungwa Mountains

Staff members of the UEMC, Francesco Rovero and Ruben Mwakisoma, were part of the team that discovered the new species of giant elephant shrew. The new species was called Rhynchocyon udzungwensis (Rovero et al. 2008) because it is endemic to only two forests in the Udzungwa Mountains (Mwanihana and Ndundulu-Luhomero), and is the largest of its kind ever found. The description of the new species was published in the February issue of the Journal of Zoology (pdf available from francesco.rovero@mtsn.tn.it)
